Archeology is an original acrylic painting on canvas, 172 x 109 cm, by London artist Ryan Louder.
Human figures surface out of a dark ground the way things surface out of earth in a dig, part materialised, still part of the material they came from. Bodies press against each other and against the dark until you cannot say where a person ends and the root or rock begins. Magenta, yellow, teal, green and burnt orange turn through the charcoal, and up in the sky zone there is a tunnel arch of light, the kind of form that arrives uninvited at the edge of sleep.
I painted this without a plan. The figures appeared as the paint went on and I let them stay half emerged. That in-between state, more there than not there, is the whole subject.
