Ballet is an original oil painting on canvas, 61 x 76 cm (24 x 30 inches), by London artist Ryan Louder.
A ballerina on pointe in an acid yellow tutu, centred against a ground of almost total black. Her arms reach out and the glow travels with them, white yellow light halving the edge of the dress and tracing her arms, and none of it comes from a lamp anywhere in the room. It comes from her. The face is downcast, eyes closed, and the whole figure rests on a single pointe shoe contact with the dark, so she reads as floating rather than standing.
I wanted the colour to be an event, not a description. The yellow does not belong to any stage lighting that exists. It belongs to how the figure arrives.
