Original acrylic painting on paper by London artist Ryan Louder, painted in 2018 — three figures walking the shoreline in the middle distance, two in dark forest green and one dead centre in bright vermillion red. The red figure is the only shout of colour in a scene of grey-green sea, churning sky and wet dark sand, and it holds the whole composition together without explaining it.

I paint straight onto the surface with no sketch or plan, so the image builds itself as the paint lands. The lone red figure is the kind of focal interrupt my paintings arrive at on their own — a result of painting from the inside of REM intrusion, where dream imagery surfaces while I'm awake. My narcolepsy was clinically confirmed at Guy's Hospital in London, and work like this is my honest record of it.
