Mothers Instinct is an original oil painting on canvas board, 45 x 60 cm, sold framed, by London artist Ryan Louder. A mother cradles her baby, two figures locked into one shape at the centre, warm coral against soft pink, outlined in blue-grey.
It is the simplest picture I have painted in years and one of the hardest to get right. Two people, one embrace, nothing else allowed in. The shapes are broad and flat and the drawing leans Picasso, and if you have ever watched a mother move a baby out of danger before her head has even caught up, you know instinct looks exactly like this, shape first, thought later. Quiet warmth, painted straight.
